AJG Advisory provides experienced, specialist consultancy support to supported living providers across England. With direct operational experience of supported living services for people with learning disabilities, autism, acquired brain injury, mental health needs and complex presentations, the advice provided is grounded in real sector knowledge, not generic healthcare consultancy.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a supported living service need to be CQC registered?

Personal care provided to people in their own homes, including supported living arrangements, requires CQC registration if regulated activities are being provided. This includes support with personal hygiene, medication, eating and drinking or other regulated activities. AJG Advisory can advise whether your service requires registration and support you through the registration process.

What does CQC look for when inspecting a supported living service?

CQC inspects supported living services against the same five key questions as other care services: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led. Inspectors focus particularly on how well the service supports people to live independently, the quality of support plans, safeguarding and Mental Capacity Act governance, and how much people are genuinely involved in decisions about their own lives.

How is supported living different from a care home from a regulatory perspective?

Supported living differs from care home provision in that people live in their own tenancies and the support is separate from the housing. CQC regulates the personal care element. The regulatory requirements are similar but the operational context is different, particularly around tenancy rights, choice and control, and the principle that people's home is genuinely their own.

Can AJG Advisory help a supported living service that has received a poor CQC rating?

Yes. AJG Advisory has experience supporting providers to improve from Requires Improvement and Inadequate ratings. This typically involves a detailed assessment of the issues that drove the poor rating, development of a comprehensive improvement plan and ongoing support through the improvement journey.

Do you support supported living providers outside of England?

AJG Advisory primarily supports CQC-registered providers operating in England. Services in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are regulated by different bodies (Care Inspectorate Wales, Care Inspectorate Scotland and RQIA respectively) and while we can offer general advisory support, regulatory-specific advice would need to be considered in that context.
